Dealing with PCOS or know someone who is? Find out how laser hair removal can help.

WHAT IS PCOS?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex hormonal condition causing abnormal growths on the ovaries. The term ‘polycystic’ means ‘many cysts’, meaning many partially grown follicles form on the ovaries, which each contain an egg. These rarely grow to maturity or produce eggs that can be fertilised.

While the cause of this remains unclear, woman experiencing PCOS will often have high levels of insulin, or male hormones called androgens. The symptoms can vary in intensity, however PCOS can cause severe long-lasting problems if not correctly managed.

It is relatively common, affecting 12 to 18 percent of women of reproductive age (between late adolescence and menopause). However almost 70% of these cases remain undiagnosed.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Amenorrhoea (no periods)
  • Acne
  • Scalp hair loss
  • Reduced fertility (difficulty in becoming pregnant)
  • Mood changes – including anxiety and depression
  • Obesity
  • Sleep apnoea
  • Excess hair growth on face, abdomen, areola, chest or thighs

The severity of these symptoms can vary between individuals and can be managed in different ways. Common management options include a healthy, balanced diet as well as the contraceptive pill. It is important to find options that you are comfortable with long term, rather than options that may simply mask problems temporarily.

HOW CAN LASER HAIR REMOVAL HELP?

While many of the symptoms above are difficult to treat, excess hair growth is something that can be managed. The sudden increase in body hair is often associated with lowered self esteem and issues relating to body image, particularly in areas where the individual had not experienced growth previously.

Fortunately, laser hair removal is a great option for removing unwanted hair. Unlike shaving or waxing, which provides short term results, laser can extend the period of time in which an individual will have no hair, as well as assist the growth to come back significantly finer, lighter and less noticeable. This can significantly reduce the visible impact of PCOS for the individual and assist to boost their confidence.

For all laser hair removal clients, MALC recommends a treatment plan of 8-10 sessions for a reduction of up to 80%. It is important to note that those who have PCOS or anyone removing hair from facial areas will require ongoing maintenance.

WHY MIGHT I NEED MORE SESSIONS?

Laser hair removal will not impact the internal hormonal irregularities that stimulate hair growth. The growth associated with PCOS is particularly persistent. Once a desired reduction in hair growth has been reached, it is important that the client books regular maintenance sessions. While this varies from person to person, 6-12 week cycles are common, with more frequent visits necessary for the face and less frequent for the body.

The experienced clinicians at MALC will provide you with a recommended treatment plan as well as analyse your progress at each treatment to ensure the best results for you.
